Land-Based vs Sea-Based OFWs
- Land-based OFWs are covered as OFW members and pay the full 15% themselves, unless a foreign employer agrees to pay the employer share. Minimum MSC is ₱8,000.
- Sea-based OFWs (seafarers) are covered as employees through their licensed manning agency, which remits contributions with the 5% employee / 10% employer split.
SSS coverage is mandatory for OFWs under the Social Security Act of 2018 (RA 11199).
How to Compute Your OFW SSS Contribution
- Convert your monthly salary abroad to pesos.
- Find the matching MSC (brackets move in ₱500 steps; anything below ₱8,000 uses the ₱8,000 minimum; anything above ₱35,000 uses ₱35,000).
- Multiply the MSC by 15%. Example: ₱20,000 MSC × 15% = ₱3,000 a month.
- If your MSC is above ₱20,000, the part above ₱20,000 is credited to your MPF account.
How to Pay SSS Contributions from Abroad
- Log in to My.SSS or the SSS Mobile App.
- Generate a Payment Reference Number (PRN) for the months you want to pay.
- Pay through the SSS app, an accredited bank or e-wallet, a remittance partner, or an SSS foreign representative office.
- Check that the payment posted under contribution inquiry.
Land-based OFWs can pay for any month within the applicable year and can pay months in advance, so many OFWs pay quarterly or yearly.
